The Watershed

Every body of water has a watershed—an area of land that drains water into some kind of  basin. The watershed is named after the basin: Swan Lake. Belfast Bay. Penobscot Bay.

Here at Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition, we’re concerned with the health of the land and the four rivers that drain into Belfast Bay. The four rivers are Little River, the Passagassawakeag, the Goose River, and the Wescot Stream.

We’re also concerned with the much larger Penobscot Bay Watershed, where the Belfast Bay Watershed is nestled. That’s why we’ve run the Penobscot Bay Stewards program for two decades.

Curious?

Lean more about what watersheds do.

Take a look at it. Maine.gov’s map shows its reach: Smith Pond, Nichols Pond, Tilden Pond; Lincolnville, Morrill, Swanville. It’s impressive.

Try our resources. Want to understand how the first peoples thrived on the watershed? Wondering about permaculture? We’re passionate about the history and future of our watersheds, and over the years, we’ve amassed quite a library.
