About the event
Hurricane Island, a 125 acre island in Penobscot Bay's Fox Island Archipelago, is a small island with a rich history. In the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, it was an active granite quarry with a town of over 1000 residents. In 1964 the Outward Bound School was established on the island, leading thousands of students in wilderness courses. In
2009, the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership was founded on the island campus with the mission of integrating scientific research and education to develop leaders prepared to address environmental issues in a rapidly changing world.
Currently the island engages students, teachers, scientists, and municipal leaders in a broad range of education projects and research initiatives focused on sustainability, resilience, inquiry, and community engagement. Each summer BBWC sends students from Troy Howard Middle School for a life-changing week of exploration and discovery.
Come hear about all the amazing work being done on this small island and how a week at Hurricane Island challenges and changes the students who go there.
In this event you will hear from Bo Hoppin, Executive Director, and Claire Gabel, Educator, of the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership. Our local teachers Martha Conway-Cole and Kathie Gass will also weigh in about what they and their students experience at the Center. Join us in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library or through ZOOM. For more information: annkinmaine@gmail.com
